Prayers & Poems

A K-9 Prayer

Treat me kindly, my beloved Master,
for no heart in all the world is more grateful than the loving heart of mine.

Do not break my spirit with a stick,
for though I should lick your hand between blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach the things you would have me learn.

Speak to me often,
for your voice is the worlds sweetest music, as you must know by the endless wagging of my tail as your footsteps fall on my waiting ear.

Please take me inside when it is cold or wet,
for I am a domesticated animal, no longer used to bitter elements, and I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth.

Keep my pan filled with fresh water,
for I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst. Feed me clean food, that I may stay well to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side, and stand ready, willing and able to protect you with my life should your life be in danger.

And Master,
when I am very old, if the great master sees fit to deprive me of my health and sight, do not turn me away from you, rather see that my trusting life is taken gently, and I shall leave you knowing that with the last breath I drew, my fate was always safest in your hands, my memory always in your heart.

Never try to replace me,
for I was a unique part of our family not to be reborn, but give my successor the love, understanding, and care you shared with me, and in his own unique way, this void will be filled with the love and loyalty only a K-9 has to give.

Remember Me

Remember me always, but do not grieve for me too long.
I have tried always to comfort you in times of sorrow, and have made every effort to add joy to your life. I never wanted to cause you pain.
Peace for me is certain now, and I suspect I will have eternal sleep.
Please, after your period of grieving for me, make room in your heart for another.
You are the kind of human being that should always have a friend like me to love. Your kind and gentle heart should not be wasted on my memory for too long. Give your love to another who also needs it.
I know your new friend will never take my place, because we had something very special.
It may not be quite the same, but a new devoted loving companion will in time, become special in their own way.
You loved me very much, and I loved you, unconditionally.
My spirit will always be with you, and no matter how deep my sleep, my grateful heart will always remember you.
